The President began his address by warmly welcoming Dr. Ishan Shivanand back to the State House. He recalled that in 2025, Dr. Shivanand had conducted meditation and mindfulness sessions for officials at the Presidential residence, which encouraged greater awareness of mental well-being and self-reflection. Referring to this year's meditation session, President Gokhool described it as both meaningful and deeply inspiring.
Addressing the gathering, President Gokhool observed that today's world is facing increasing levels of stress, depression, loneliness, and mental health challenges. He praised Dr. Shivanand's "Compassion Unites" initiative for bringing together governments, educational institutions, healthcare professionals, businesses, civil society organisations, and faith communities on a common platform to promote compassion-based solutions. He emphasized that mental health is not merely a medical issue but a shared responsibility essential for nation-building.
The President proudly announced that after the United Kingdom (House of Commons) and South Africa, Mauritius has now become part of this global movement. He noted that the initiative launched by Dr. Ishan Shivanand is fostering a new global culture of compassion, dialogue, and collaborative social engagement.
Highlighting the upcoming "Champions of Compassion" event, scheduled to be held in Mauritius on 11 July, President Gokhool specifically praised Dr. Shivanand's vision. He stated that the initiative goes far beyond hosting an international Kun Khmer Championship. Through mentorship, scholarships, and community service, it aims to transform athletes into "Compassion Champions," thereby connecting the spirit of sport with the service of humanity.
The event was attended by Mauritius' Minister of Education and Human Resources, along with representatives from various government ministries, public institutions, the private sector, the medical fraternity, academia, civil society organisations, and religious communities. Participants described the initiative as a significant step forward in strengthening global collaboration for mental health.
